Ron Apgar, an artist, is an extensive world traveler with a desire for adventure and a keen interest in culture and life experiences, has traveled throughout Mexico, Central America, Asia, France, Russia, Spain and the U.S.
Following his Bachelors degree in the Fine Arts, and further graduate studies, Ron traveled to Mexico and Guatemala to study art and culture. He was especially drawn to the Mexican muralists Rivera, Orozco and Siqueiros and the resurgence of Mexican culture in the arts with its roots in the Aztec and Mayan civilizations. While in Latin America, Ron was invited by the Guatemalan Cultural Commission to paint murals in a joint effort with Guatemalan artists promoting the indigenous heritage and architecture.
Returning to the U.S., Ron accepted a grant to teach art to Los Angeles inner-city youth following the Watts Riots. He was hired by the university to teach college classes in Art, Culture and Symbolism. Ron also promoted, organized and traveled with a university art student study group for cross-cultural summer classes in Mexico. During this decade, Ron traveled to Spain, where he lived for 3 years painting and exploring the rich Spanish art heritage in the works of Goya, El Greco, Murillo, and Velazquez in the cities of Madrid, Toledo and Barcelona. While in Spain, he also traveled to the former Soviet Union on two occasions, under cultural study sponsorship in the arts. While there, Ron studied art at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and at Voldegrad. Under the auspice of the Russian Peace Foundation, Ron was commissioned to complete two paintings for the Foundation representing peaceful coexistence of the American and Russian people. By accepting private commissions, Ron’s art helped subsidize his stay in Europe.
Ron’s approach to his painting is to convey the metamorphic quality of his subject matter, engaging the viewer with an interpersonal connection. Ron has a love for color, movement, and space with the edge of contemporary and modern art that has never before been explored by your typical painter.
